Demeter

Cast circle

  1. Light candles
  2. Create circle and cut the door
  3. Call quarters
    1. (Air = East) Turn to the east and say: Guardians of the East, Powers of Air; you who are thought and the wind upon my face, I call upon and invite your presence to witness this rite.
    2. (Fire = South) Turn to the south and say: Guardians of the South, Powers of Fire, you who are passion and the hearth, I call upon and invite your presence to witness this rite.’
    3. (Water = West) Turn to the West and say: Guardians of the West, Powers of Water, you who are emotions and pure love, I call upon and invite your presence to witness this rite.
    4. (Earth = North) Turn to the north and say:Guardians of the North, Powers of Earth, you who are the stabilizer and nurturer, I call upon and invite your presence to witness this rite.’
    5. Return to the alter and light the incense (representing Air) and the candle that represents fire.
  4. Invoke Gods / Goddesses
    1. We are going to only invoke Demeter as this is a ritual for her
    2. Goddess Demeter, Goddess of agriculture and the fields, Goddess of bread and of mothers we invite you here as we give honor to you.

Ritual

  1. Demeter, honored Goddess, Goddess of agriculture and the fields we honor you.
    Demeter Honored Goddess, Bringer of the seasons we honor you.
  2. Place offerings of food (in this case we have specially made bread for this) and drink on alter.
  3. Honored Demeter, We give you this offering of bread, made from your grains and of drink.
  4. Light nightly candle (one for each of the 12 days of Yule.
    1. Each night we light a candle in place of a Yule Log. Each candle represents one of the 12 nights of Yule.

Close circle

    1. (Earth = North) Turn to the north and say: Guardians of the North, Powers of Earth, we thank you for your presence and protection and ask you to go in peace.
    2. (Water = West) Turn to the West and say: Guardians of the West, Powers of Water, we thank you for your presence and protection and ask you to go in peace.
    3. (Fire = South) Turn to the south and say: Guardians of the South, Powers of Fire, we thank you for your presence and protection and ask you to go in peace.’
    4. (Air = East) Turn to the east and say: Guardians of the East, Powers of Air, we thank you for your presence and protection and ask you to go in peace.
